I played official tournaments for years when I was younger. I've handled a wide range of different sets. The best-feeling ones I held were always plastic because the most important factor to feel is how heavy the weight in the bottom is, and the extra heavy weights were in the plastic sets. Also, the weight distribution point is incredibly bad. Casinos use machine-made plastic dice, not handmade wooden ones because machines and a uniform material are how you get perfectly engineered weight distribution. The real answer is much simpler: opulence. In such a prestigious tournament, while rationalizations may be propped up after, the truth is spending excessive money is the point. It's not really any more complicated than that.

@FT029 honestly, at the level of play these are being made for, I wonder if it would affect things at all. We're talking about games that are typically extremely long with players who are at a level of mental visualization that it's typical for them to be able to play games blindfolded. I'm only a small fraction of that level and I'm able to immediately and perfectly reset a board if it ever gets knocked over because of how much of the game is already happening in my head, so I wouldn't be surprised if they could play with one of those medieval sets with no appreciable difference.

I mean, there is, but we're an oligharchy, so it's so minimal, full of loopholes, and hard to prove that it's effectively non-existent. We also have anti trust laws to break up monopolies, but those are basically only invoked at the pleasure of the government, and since 99% of our politicians are bought and paid for through various forms of legalized bribery from mostly business interests, they haven't been invoked in decades dispite the rise of modern megacorps. Our government cares about as much about democracy, the rule of law, and our constitution as one from a banana republic, and you'll have a much easier time understanding the USA if you assume our government really is that corrupt.
