Corporate structures select for those drawn to power so effectively they filter psychopaths into CEO positions at a proportion at least 20x higher than the general population, and that's just the extreme of those craving power not including malignant narcissists or anything else including those who aren't mentally ill but just kinda self-interested, power-hungry assholes. All power is relative, so the more they have relative to others, the better they feel about their status because they're focused primarily on their position in a heirarchy than any real measure of their well-being. Hell, there are jobs that exist for the sole reason to make their boss look more important by having more people working under them (and research suggests it's not a small number). The idea that the way we structure our business is efficient is just mythology on a good day.

@TheGroovyJones no, that was the focus of the bill. The key thing you're missing is that the high-level executives are effectively a class of their own, and they're the ones who decide if, how much, and to which politician the company "donates" so their interests are protected as well. On paper, the CEO is just the employee of the shareholders but in practice generally it's more like the power sharing relationship between the clergy and nobility in medieval Europe kept in balance dispite competing interests through moving in the same circles, an unwritten code of conduct, solidarity in contempt for the rest of us, and the implications of what the other's elimination would mean for their position. Some differences, of course, but the highest level executive positions don't function in the same employer/employee dynamic the rest of us live in, dispite how much they want to offload responsibility for their actions when convenient. It's....complicated.

@TheGroovyJones kinda yes, but not as much as you may think. For example, in 2007, Republicans blocked a bill that would have given shareholders a yearly non-binding advisory vote on their executive compensation packages...so in some ways, shareholders have a lot of power, but in others, they have remarkably little and our country is so corrupt that even giving them a non-binding vote to check their executives' ability to decide what they're paid is too much for DC. The thing to keep in mind is that the conservative ideal is to have businesses run in a form of neofeudalism, so too much accountability on consolidation of power kinda butts heads with that, unfortunately (so much so, that they're willing to oppose something that would increase their own profits)

@hundejahre good man! 👍 Remember the origins of the term "sabotage" comes from a type of wooden shoe that just "accidentally" kept finding its way into the machinery of factories with poorly treated workers. Strikes are really a lot better for everyone than many other methods of resistance workers have used in the past, so employers should really be careful how much they incentivise their workers to dust off old and less legal playbooks.

Yeah, if you can bring the right to repair movement (which has a particular bone to pick with Deere as I understand) together with the strikers in an organized way, they'd be hurting even more.

@woodstream6137 yup, the entire system is built on lies as much as feudalism. Whatever they think they can say to excuse consolidating as much power in as few hands as possible. Replace the divine right of kings with the invisible hand of the free market and keep the game in the corridors of power going.

Give them time. They may yet do exactly that. There's no such thing as unskilled labor.
