I appriciate the open-mindedness. If I may take a moment to try and convince you a bit more solidly; his "Universal" Basic Income is paid for (not even completely) with a regressive VAT tax, which will fall mostly on the poor, and, since you have to choose between the "UBI" and other assistance programs...well that leaves the poorest completely fucked, the rich $12k/year richer, and those in the middle exactly where they were. (And we haven't even talked about what it would do to housing prices) More: https://the2020progressive.com/andrew-yang-ubi-not-answer-for-progressives/ We will likely need some form of UBI in the future (especially if we're not going real, post-capitalism socialiam), but not Yang's, and using a jobs guarentee to do all the work needed to fight climate change and rebuild our infrastructure (which Bernie's plan does) will set back the deadline for the automation issue a good decade at least (and we need housing as a human right before a UBI anyway) so step 1 appears to need to be Bernie's platform.

@zerefdragneel2289 tackling climate change and rebuilding our infrastructure will take care of your concern about a jobs guarentee for at least a decade. There is a lot of work that needs doing because we need to mobilize in a way we haven't done since WW2. Luckily it won't need a draft or sending people off to kill and die and all the work will go into useful things instead of bombs and tanks. Once that problem is dealt with, we can decide how we want to tackle the automation problem.

@xmobile. and let's not forget his "Universal" Basic Income is paid for with a regressive VAT tax, which will fall mostly on the poor, and, since you have to choose between the "UBI" and other assistance programs...well that leaves the poorest completely fucked, the rich $12k/year richer, and those in the middle exactly where they were. Fuck! That! Shit! (And we haven't even talked about what it would do to housing prices)

And let's not forget that a VAT tax is regressive, or that it would just raise housing costs if done without massive reform there, meaning if you're poor enough to have to choose between Yang's "Universal" Basic Income and other assistance programs, you get fucked!

@zerefdragneel2289 you're missing the big picture for the next decade. We will literally not be able to automate ourselves out of the pile of work that has been growing for decades before the deadline to deal with climate change. Even when things are developed, there is rollout time to consider. There's simply too much work to be done that the market won't pay for to allow automation to make human labor unnecessary during that time period. As things get automated, that would just free up labor to put to other tasks that have been going undone for decades. This process will push back the threat of automation by increasing the amount of work being done in the economy by getting to work on those tasks that markets don't incentivise the doing of. After that sure, we absolutely should be looking into a (better) UBI plan, but the immediate problem isn't a lack of work for human so do, but markets not putting labor to tasks that need doing. (Side note, the jobs guarentee would also greatly increase workers' negotiating power vs their employers)

@gnome3928 BS, Bernie's plan is way better than Canada's and Yang's won't get us any closer to a public plan than Warren's for many of the same reasons. While you fuss over how quickly the festering bandaid is being pulled of to be replaced with M4A (which itself is already a compromise plan that leaves the hospitals and big pharma private instead of nationalizing them too) 10s of thousands of people die and the market failure of privatized healthcare continues to exponentially raise costs (as it always will with how market forces act on healthcare in the real world).

@ikexbankai Bernie is the only one who has a real strategy for moving the country left from the current insane Overton Window: Put forward very popular, strong, progressive policies to get a movement behind you, and use that pressure to force politicians to work with you and primary out of office those who don't. FDR did it, and it worked. The "Democrats" have abandoned the strategy for decades and now we have a protofascist in the Whitehouse.

@KLm912 still gonna be useful to get into congress if we can get him there, but yeah, plenty of smarter progressive pundits online to look to for news. Let's put him where he's more useful: calling establishment hacks liars to their face on the floor of congress. Even if he misses a few, he's in what's called a target rich environment.

@zerefdragneel2289 side note, another way to look at the Jobs Guarentee, is as a public option for employment. I know that's more of a semantic point than a real arguement, but food for thought.

@ksnyder586 the first time I got foodstamps was while working 5 days/week at one of the hardest jobs I've ever had. You don't know what I've experienced and your point is irrelevant to the point I was making. Try actually reading what people are saying instead of what you think they're saying so you can spout a talking point.

@susanw1863 very little will go into the healthcare system. The landlords and banks holding the mortgages will get it first.

@frank254100 wow, talking about a politician like you would a lover or religion...that doesn't raise red flags /s
