For reference, legalization of interracial marriage happened 28 years before majority approval because even back in 1967 with all the racism around, the politicians were able to but what was right before what was popular. Compare to 2011, just a year after some of these quotes (with clear, rapid movement of public opinion in the direction of legalization) where we hit majority approval on gay marriage but still had a good ways to go before the Supreme Court (not even these legislators) acknowledged that the bans were unconstitutional. Fighting against positive change to uphold the status quo makes someone a conservative, at best (if not a full neolib/neocon).
