Tolkien: Balrogs: basically fallen angels turned into demons by a dark god/Satan in an attempt to make them more powerful Dragons: living weapons designed by said dark god/Satan to be able to fight angels Spiders: descendants of a horrible creature of origin unknown to even the heighest beings that crawled into reality through the cracks seperating it from the abyss beyond and collaborated with said dark god/Satan (arguably as an equal) in a plan to consume the sources of light in the world which succeeded and plunged the entire world into darkness. The sun, moon, and stars are set so high in the sky to prevent such a thing from REoccuring because putting it in what amounted to the garden of eden and guarded by the equivalent to angels and elves on par with high-to-epic level D&D characters wasn't enough protection from the eldritch abominations that don't belong in reality (but none-the less have infested it) called spiders, of which Shelob was to the origional one what your house spider would be to Shelob. Yeah...don't be afraid to write your phobia into your fantasy story.

  9. D&D fans, see also the bebilith. Something like a spider crossed with in inverted scorpion that is strong enough to infest one of the lower layers of the abyss and subsist on hunting demons and big enough that you could just about walk under it (if it cooperated instead of killing you, of course)
