  1. To truely appreciate Gawain's character, you have to go back to the older versions where he's still pagan. In those, he serves as another foil to Morgan la Fay, putting aside his religious differences and focusing on the shared values of chivalry to work together with Arthur and the knights for the good of the realm. Of course, once that element is removed, and you get a bunch of paragons added (deminishing the whole "good people trying to live up to an even greater ideal" theme), he becomes less interesting. Oh, I'd be remiss to not post a link to this song about him and the green knight. Some liberties are taken with the narrative, but as the story is rather inconsistent from the versions I've seen and the original version of Gawain has been flattened with his Christianization, I'm cool with it (and it's a fun one). https://youtu.be/O7Fa1B7cAGE
