At the bare minimum (and probably half-that for software given how quickly that industry moves. There's even a strong case for total copyright abolition. The current system is absolute madness and does not facilitate innovation as was the origional intent. It must end.

@jwhite-1471 check the video links I posted. A whole lot of independent artists already effectively work without copyright protection because they're producing works that aren't expensive enough to be worth the legal services to defend. They monetize based on donations and/or a pay for creation instead of a pay for distribution system.

I don't think we'll ever get rid of that distinction or stop needing to be particular about the difference between being a contractor and working as part of a company, but it's an area to be extra careful of, as it's ripe for potential abuse. Your gut revulsion to those with power trying to manipulate that distinction is well-founded and if I ever see a good way to solve the issue forever, it has my full attention.

@rmsgrey unless they can justify it as a potentially profitable investment in PR, it does get onto shakey legal grounds, yes. Usually that's enough to justify whatever executives might want to do if they pair it with some investment into advertising or something to make sure people know they're doing it, but then if it doesn't turn out to be profitable after all, it's possible (even perhaps likely) they will be replaced by someone who will be more cutthroat than them. Corporations are effectively psychopathic homunculai created by tying a contract to a stack of money...or alternatively an AI set singlemindely on the goal of short-term profits, no different than an AI set to make as many paperclips as possible...even if it means destroying the world to turn it into material for more paperclips with the only difference between it and a classic rogue ai doomsday scenario being that they replace gears and circuits with people and they're not superhumanly intelligent (though advances in weak ai to supplement the human minds set to work in the algorithms of corporate beurocracy are starting to push that for some tech and investment companies) As long as you don't limit the idea of an ai apocalypse to needing to be made of metal and silicone, ones and zeros, we're actually living in a slow-moving one right now and haven't even realized it for what it is. Sleep well 😉

@WindsorMason yeah, it's disgusting but often true. That fine print is extremely important for those doing creative work.
