The fact that human instinctive violence tends to manifest with punching rather than biting gives us a massive passive resistance to intraspecies rabies transmission without which large human population centers would have been rather difficult to establish. With as much as pre-modern cities were already plagued by disease (including but not limited to those caused by poor sanitation), large human settlements might simply never have developed if we tended to bite each other when mad. Before knowledge of viruses it would just look like putting too many humans together in one place eventually causes them to go insane and start killing each other. Switching our instincts from biting to hitting may have been a prerequisite for civilization itself.
