Even if Earth is so rare that there is less than 1 per galaxy, we're in an immense (possibly infinite) ocean of galaxies. Given the size and age of the universe, basically any non-zero probably makes it actually inevitable that somewhere will be able to talk about these things, and the number of planets without life are fundamentally irrelevant for the purposes of this discussion. Probabilistic arguements only appear to make sense when one either doesn't grasp the scales of time and space involved (which admittedly are hard to wrap a human mind around a fraction of) or get the causal relationship backwards and think that because life is unlikely on any given planet that it's a miracle that we're here to talk about it, when it's really just that these conversations can only emerge from planets where intelligent life has evolved.

Its bulk means you need larger tanks for the same mass of fuel, and dealing with cooling it and making pumps that can reliably move the smaller molecules requires tighter tolerances and through rates. Further, as mentioned, the increased combustion temperature adds even more engineering challenges.

  25. +johnny Ilooddte It's not "welfare", rockets are already expensive due to what's called the tyranny of the rocket equation (and so are other planned applications for this), and nearly all proof-of-concept prototypes are done in a way that's impractical to scale up, but that doesn't mean that economies of scale don't come into play when you are designing for large-scale prodiction. Your argument is invalid (even if you didn't just make that number up). Please stop posting variations of this comment on everything. You're just embarrassing yourself.

The "drugs" portion of the CVS nearest my house is only about 1/5th of the floor area (counting both the over the counter area and the area where the pharmacists work and keep the prescription drugs) and it's about normal sized...mind you a huge portion of it is cosmetics so it doesn't carry the selection you might think from that description but still.

  28. Yeah, the fact that if this were a real mission with a manned capsule as payload that everyone would have walked away disappointed, but perfectly fine does them great credit. "Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing" as the saying goes. Broadly speaking, it wasn't even a failure as the mission was to sacrifice an expendable test rocket in exchange for troubleshooting and performance data. That's still 100% a successful mission even if the data you got back wasn't the data you were expecting.

  30. Net positive energy fuels can't be created. The can be collected and refined, of course, but never created. Entropy won't even let us have net 0 fuels. Just look at the start and end products. The end products have to have less usable energy than the starting products. In this case (even ignoring getting the hydrogen in the first place) we go from H2 to H2 & heat, so energy had to be added at some point. Sources of usable energy all trace back to non-reversible processes.

  33. Ox King I consider it like having easy mode selected by default on something like FTL. A way for more casual players to get used to the game mechanics before playing the real version. Anything that gets more people familiar with orbital mechanics, even if it's by baby steps is a good thing. Once we start getting most people used to them, we can start having less silly sci fi. (Except when we want things to be silly intentionally)

Scoop Earth yeah, the only other channel I follow for space news is sci show space, because while they tend to give only an overview before all the data is in, they're at least pretty good at being clear as to what is speculation and how grounded it is. Issac Arthur's also pretty good, but that's more hard sci-fi/futurism analysis rather than going over more current stuff.

  36. Robert Ostman it's all publically available knowledge that anyone that wants it can get ahold of, just condensed to a layman's level for educational purposes. The broad concepts aren't going to be anywhere near enough for anyone to actually build something with because the details are THAT finicky. The stuff that would be dangerous to release is classified anyway, so non-classified info is fine to share anywhere.

  41. +Ben David My question was about having the coolant double as a "fuel" if you already decided you needed a coolant rather than just being reaction mass after it was too warm. Using H2 as a coolant and then burning O2 in afterward would just be the OP's question which was already answered (and I understand why it wouldn't be good). Theoretically, if you only need to cool the combustion chamber and nozzle rather than the whole reaction, you're dealing with a square-cube situation where the added heat of the combustion would be more than negated by the cooling, but I don't know if that kicks in strong enough at any sane size or if I'm misunderstanding something.

To clarify, using the fossil fuels example, you can collect it and refine it into usable fuels like kerosene, but you can't create it (outside of using some other, larger energy source to run the combustion process backwards at a loss, at which point you could argue you're refining that energy source into the kerosene). The energy was already in the substance, so you're not really creating it, just changing it into a more readily usable form. Hope that clarifies what I meant by refined vs created. I know the terminology is a bit wonky since we started with fuel vs energy transport (which isn't quite accurate) as opposed to energy source vs energy storage (both of which could be fuels or non-fuels, technically speaking), but I was trying to keep the terminology as close as possible to the OP to make it easier to understand for him.
