@kamaeq That is not what settled law means. It means there's a ruling by a high court already or several court cases that have the same ruling. The job of the judiciary is to interpret the law. Including the Constitution. Just because you disagree with their interpretation doesn't make it unconstitutional. Only a court decides that. Even settled law can be overturned, it just requires profound evidence that it was misinterpreted. Edit: Roe v Wade is a good example. It was considered "settled law" due to how long it had been around and how many challenges it had withstood. However, 99% of lawyers and judges knew it was based on an intentional misinterpretation of the law, but it required the highest court to deem that.

@methane1027 It's been far more concentrated throughout history. It has nothing to do with wealth. It has to do with reducing the requirements, in a way, to be considered an "expert." An expert used to be someone that studied something intently for decades. They did or didn't go to school, they wrote many books and papers on the subject that increased understanding of the subject, they contributed to the scientific advancement of the subject, etc. We've decreased the standards to get into higher education, decreased the standards to move past a basic degree in many subjects, and we now have so many doctorates in almost every subject (now considered experts) that they've run out of real and important things to research and write their thesis on because your thesis has to be something new or that you can prove has changed in the subject. Which means people that haven't actually contributed anything have reached the highest degree of education in these fields and as such is considered an expert based on their education on the subject. They haven't contributed to the field in any meaningful way, but because of their degree can decide the direction the field needs to go. That's the problem. When everyone has degrees, they become no more significant than a high school diploma.

The economy thing is because they changed the metrics to determine it. It used to be hard numbers combined with other factors like layoffs, part-time vs full-time, and labor participation. Now it's just hard numbers. It's the same with crime statistics. They acknowledge that SA and gr@pe are severely under reported, but only use the officially reported cases to determine how prevalent it is and pretend that's not true for any other crimes. The real measurement is reported crimes combined with the victimization study which surveys how many victims of crimes are there are.

It used to mean something. It no longer does. The title is now just used an appeal to authority. Much like many words have been shifted and changed for political purposes.

@ClayWeblogistics Exactly! It used to mean you'd achieved something in the field. Now it just means you got this super special degree that millions of others have too. Also, used to an expert in one field was completely disregarded in pretty much any other field. Now, you can be certified an expert in one field and used as an authority in a completely unrelated one.
