@grafvonscyth2928 That's not what happened during the winter. The animals still needed care. In fact, much greater care, so they weren't lost to the winter, and then no new births for spring. Including guarded because preditors were very hungry as food was scarce. Every farm had some animals. Inside, clothing is being made and mended. Blankets crafted so the family doesn't freeze to death. I don't understand why people think winter was leisure time. It was just a different type of work being done. Vikings, for example, would join the women in making sails and ships would be fixed or made. Preparing for the spring when they'd set sail again. I come from many generations of farmers. It's not what you and others try to romanticize it to be. You have maybe 2 months when something isn't being done to the fields. That's occupied by feeding the animals with the hay you've stored and keeping them alive, stretching the food you preserved, drying seeds to plant in the spring, and fixing anything that broke or tore. There are still people that live just like back then and not just the Amish. Winter was just as busy as any other time of year. Just not outside as much.
