@milesmanges 14 months isn't a "puppy". That's an adult dog. You're all over these comments showing your complete lack of knowledge. Like Styx said, it would have been shot and killed by the neighbor.

Lot of ignorant people in the comments. Hunting dogs aren't pets. They're kept in a large pen outside. They aren't in the house. They aren't coddled. There's a very strict emotional distance kept between the dogs and the owner. There can be no blurring of the line between master and dog. Just like you can't pet an assistance dog while it's working because it causes confusion for the dog. These are working dogs not companion dogs. There's no friendship. It's a mutual beneficial relationship. The dog performs its job in exchange for easy food. If the dog can't, won't, or causes problems it's useless and has no future. Because it hasn't been socialized like a companion dog would be while young, it's not going to magically become a good companion. Edit: If you own a working breed, they become depressed if they don't perform some type of job. I've only owned working breeds and each one had something they did to "help" me or that they were taught to do daily. Otherwise they become depressed, aggressive, and destructive. So if you remove the task, like this dog did on its own, it became aggressive and destructive. They are animals, not humans. Just like any animal they can become wild and turn on you no matter how much training you do. People need to remember that.

That's you creating that picture. Not her. Generally speaking that's not how hunting dogs behave. They're not pets. They aren't coddled like a pet is.

What else should people with them do? Nobody is going to want it. If you give it to a shelter it will face the same fate. Either way it's going to cease to exist one way or another. If you live in a rural area go to your local shelter. It's full of hunting breeds. They either failed to return on a hunting trip, were abandoned because they wouldn't perform, or turned over for the same reason. Ask how long the ones with escape artist on their information slip have been there and it's likelihood of being adopted. Especially if it's also aggressive. It's chances are nil. Edit: I had a border collie. It leapt for a meter readers throat because he was pulling something out and she was trying to protect me. I grabbed her mid leap and held her. She never wiped around and tried to bite me. No dog I've ever owned and had to grab to restrain has. That dog was agreesive to the point of being dangerous.

@BlackHawkDownSD They aren't supposed to until commanded to. It also means it was an escape artist. There was a dog breeder who's Rottweilers chewed through their cage and killed her Beagles. Should she have shrugged it off and not killed them? I know it's hard for people to believe but some dogs just aren't trainable to that level. It takes a high intelligence dog to train as a hunting dog. Some aren't trainable beyond extremely basic commands. This is pretty common practice if a dog can't perform. Hunting dogs aren't pets. They're to perform a specific task. Just like if you're looking for a dog to help you herd, if it can't it's nothing but an extra mouth to feed and taking up resources for one that will do the job. Would it be better that it runs off in the woods and starves on the first hunting trip? I know people that have herding dogs, deer dogs, and boar dogs. They all do the same thing if one can't be trained. Edit: Hunting dogs are high energy breeds. There's a reason shelters are full of them and most will never find a home and be put down. People don't want large, high energy, short-haired dogs. If it's an escape artist on top of all that nobody will ever adopt it and it'll end up exactly where it is now.
