  1. Affording spices depends on the era, area, and spice used. Making things spicy (hot) was done by the poor in the Americas because of the abundance of peppers that are from the area. Spices that aren't native to a given area would be more expensive. That's why Cajun food is much spicier than Creole. Cajun was poor people and Creole, which leans more into French cooking, was higher income. If you're talking about England then yes spices were generally a sign of wealth.
