@thecheese4255 A cake isn't legally required either, but that doesn't stop them from trying to force it. I've seen protests outside of Churches because they dare teach that being gay isn't supported by their religion and trying to force them to perform gay marriages. If they're doing that, they're also pressuring lawmakers. Edit: No comment said anything about "outlawing" atheist marriage. I have no idea where that came from or why you felt the need to attempt to add it into the conversation. Religious ceremonies are also legally binding marriage ceremonies. Otherwise you'd also have to married by a justice of the peace on top of your religious ceremony. At no point in US history has it been legally required that marriage be only performed by a religious institution.

@jaynawilliams8923 Fun fact to add. Clinton officially defined marriage in the federal government as between a man and woman. Obama ran as against gay marriage in his first term.
