Where were they being held? If it’s inside a building, yes that’s perfectly legal. The buildings are private property. Protests are for outside on the sidewalk. It also depends on if their speech crossed into threatening. That’s also illegal. You can’t threaten physical harm. I’m also pretty sure Columbia is a private university and therefore not subject to first amendment protections. That’s only for state run schools. That’s why private schools can be religious. Edit: Know your rights includes knowing where they don’t apply.

I think it’s the double standard. If saying the n word isn’t protected at a public university then other slurs shouldn’t be. If it is free speech, and it is, then all should be tolerated and allowed. Hence why the author brought up those groups. Edit: We’ve seen students be removed for “hate speech”. If it applies to one group it applies to all. If it doesn’t then it’s discriminatory rules which is illegal. It’s an opportunity to undermine and get rid of “hate speech” rules on college campuses.

Schools are considered part of the government. Except private ones of course. Any state college must abide by the Constitution.

Those organizations don’t overrule US law. During Obama’s term there was a UN resolution to do away with private ownership of small arms. We still have them. Any treaty signed by the U.S. must be approved by Congress and ratified by the states to take effect here. That’s never going to happen.

That would be Dershowitz’s point. He’s been part of a few first amendment cases.

Columbia is a private university. They are not subject to free speech. You tell people to send kids to private schools or home school only to undermine them with stuff like this. It’s because they are not subject to the government and therefore the Constitution that makes them better alternatives. You’re arguing to eliminate all private schools if you’re saying they should be treated like a public school. Public schools are subject to the Constitution because they are a part of the government. You do not have free speech at private schools. Columbia is private property. So you now don’t like private property and people being able to set rules for it?

@brawndothethirstmutilator9848 The court has never overruled that decision but has severely limited it. The court has ruled repeatedly hate speech is protected speech

Racial slurs are protected speech according to many Supreme Court rulings. “Public standards” are set by society. That doesn’t mean the government can imprison you for breaking them. Instead you suffer from societal repercussions, not government ones. Public universities fall under the government. Private ones do not. You can limit speech at private schools. You can’t at public ones. You can’t selectively enforce those rules however. If slurs break the rules for one group, they do for all groups. Otherwise it’s discriminatory which is illegal public or private. This was why Harvard and others were called before Congress. Those are private universities that have hate speech rules. They weren’t applying those rules to all groups. Edit: Honestly if words are too much for you, perhaps don’t go into public spaces. It’s not society’s job to protect you from people being mean or offending you. Offense is something the individual decides. I could find short hair on women offensive. That doesn’t mean I get to force society to bend to my will.

That defeats the purpose of the Constitution. It’s to regulate government. I wasn’t aware a company could put in jail which is what the first amendment protects you from.
