I would speculate the thinking in doing that was it's a win either way. The taking down the drone is a win and if you add in the pilot needing to eject it could be used to get Russians behind the war. The US tried to kill our sons kind of thing. Russia's side is the drone was intentionally flown where they knew it would be considered an act aggression, our brave pilots attempted to intercept without firing to prevent further escalation, etc. If the pilot had been killed it would have been even better to get the Russian population behind the war. Russia has never really valued the life of its citizens beyond cannon fodder. That's not a dis either, it's just how Russia has always been. Even long before Communism. So understanding that is key to understanding military decisions that are made.
