It wouldn't be a few thousand by the time they were done. They'd add penalties and interest so your $2,000 owed quickly grows to tens of thousands or more.

He didn't lose them. Yes the House voted to not do it, but it had already passed the house and Senate. The Senate isn't going to pass the new one so they're not going anywhere.

@fungdark8270 Absolutely not. The tips should not be everyone's. The tip is for the service that waiter/waitress provided. It's not for the lazy one that didn't earn any. I've been to places that do that. I will ask before I give a tip if it's someplace new or when traveling. If it is, I give a small one on the card and give a cash tip to my server. Making abundantly clear that it's for them. Wait staff makes less than the rest of the staff, even though they are the face of the restaurant. Bad service will kill an experience no matter how great the cooking staff is. They also can make bad cooks better because if your service is excellent, you're more likely to overlook a meh meal. They deserve the tip.

@charlesvan13 "small businesses are always such cheapskates". They aren't being cheapskates because that means they can easily afford more, but just don't. They can't afford more or they go out of business and everyone loses their jobs. Understand what words mean when you use them. You note later that they have very thin profit margins which is what you should have said rather than using cheapskate.

It's always been that you're supposed to have reported cash tips. That is part of your income. Just most people are aware there's no way to track it so report just enough to hit minimum wage and don't report the rest. There's no way for them to know for sure unless you're spending an obscene amount more than you're reporting.

If you weren't making minimum wage adding your tips in, the company is legally required to makeup the difference. They were cooking the books because that's the only way the government didn't come after them when they filed.

This is why I always tip in cash if I can. They can't track it. Unfortunately most don't anymore because adding it to the card is easier.

How are restaurants going to be able to track cash tips? They'll have to search employees when they get off every shift.
