In my hometown we elected the Police Chief so our police don't answer to the Mayor. During the lockdowns they made it clear that they aren't the mask police and have far important tasks to take care of. Not a single person or business was fined that didn't follow the edicts of the governor or Mayor no matter how irate the Karens got. Then during the riots there was a group trying to take down our Confederate statue to the single person in our county that died during the Civil War. The police chief allowed a group of armed citizens to protect it 24/7 with an officer regularly stopping by. It's a world of difference when they answer to the people instead of the Mayor.
