This is already in the process in the US. My daughter-in-law works for a bank and they got notice Friday from the fed that they will be moving to digital currency. A small amount of certain small denominations will remain in circulation, but most will be removed. The stink that's been raised for just a couple of businesses that tried to go cashless I don't see this being tolerated by the people. I guess they think leaving a bit in circulation will appease people. They tried to phase checks out with the cards and that didn't work. 19% of all transactions are still made in cash. Almost 8 million people don't have bank accounts. It will directly impact the homeless and elderly. This is something both sides will resist, but for different reasons.

@fredbloggs5902 There is no current federal law. There are many states with laws saying this dating as far back as 1978. There is currently the Payment Choice Act that's passed the House and will likely pass the Senate that will federally make it the customers choice in what payment method they use for any in person transaction less than $ 2,000.
