@brianmccain8818 I don't agree with that. The school already got paid so what are they going to lose? That's who issued the degree, not the government. I like the UKs system. If you haven't found a job that pays a livable wage within a certain amount of time within your field of study, the loan is written off and it comes out of the college that gave you the worthless degree. That would lower the prices and get rid of a lot of these degrees that don't have a job market. The colleges are reaping the benefits of the current loan system making money hand over fist. They should be responsible for the outcome of the education they gave you.

@joeybaby2505 The money is going to paid out to someone no matter what. Why not them? I've never seen so many butthurt that people are getting some of their taxes back. You're acting like they aren't already paying into the system.

@adamstevenson6444 It's not going to though. I don't know where you're getting that it will. It's wealth that's going to be taken from the Middle Class and given to the upper class. Most student debt is held by people with a Master's degree or higher. They will make tremendously more over their employment lifetime than those who didn't go. Lower class doesn't pay taxes already and most of them received scholarships and government grants to attend college so they hold little debt. The majority of the debt relief will go to doctors, those in STEM, attorneys, etc. The cutoff amount for income is $125,000 individual and $250,000 household. That's not the Middle Class. Middle Class is $80,000 for household. Edit: Plus this isn't ending the current student loan system or changing it all.

I told my son to take it. It's my tax dollars paying for it, so he might as well get some of it. He doesn't owe a lot and this will erase what little he still owes.

@condew6103 It's not tuition. My state put a lock on it. Then they just increase fees and housing costs. Just focusing on tuition isn't going to fix it either.

Disagree. Why should they be punished for the stupidity of the government? You should have to do the same for taking the deductions the government gives you on your taxes if we're going down that road. Youd get a mark for Earned Income Credit, a mark for writing off medical expenses, people that adopt will get a mark because the government pays them back part of those expenses. For taking the government incentive for buying an electric car, solar panels, or for buying certain appliances or insulation, etc. My taxes are paying for this, so why shouldn't my son get some of my money? You're punishing the individual for the actions of the government which is ridiculous. Edit: I bought solar panels so I'm getting $17,000 from the government for doing so. You'd say that's just me getting back some of the taxes I've paid in, but don't hold the same view on this even though they've been paying taxes as well and so have their families.

@DeloreanJack What job market do you think their generation was entering into? You don't know when they graduated or what generation they are. I know the job market I was entering into. One where the Silent Generation couldn't afford to retire thanks to the Carter administration destroying the economy and a severe recession to keep it from collapsing. So the generation that should have been leaving the job market weren't, companies were moving out of the US, only a couple of colleges even offered IT programs and the computer age was really kicking into high gear as tech rapidly developed, etc. My generation had to create a new economy and job market. We invented startup companies and had to be far more entrepreneurial than any previous generation or one since (as a whole). We still are responsible for 50% of startups today. The generation before yours wasn't the Baby Boomers. Before pulling the "our jobs are being shipped overseas" card you really need to look into when the bulk of that occurred because it wasn't during Millenials and certainly not Gen Z. Edit: NAFTA had been newly signed and China opened to more freely trade with. So my generation is when the US stopped making things and our trade deals turned us into a consumer economy basically overnight. This will be the 4th once in a lifetime recession that directly impacts my generation.
