josephstolen-election5949 "typically critical Russian media outlets" Like who? The state controls the media in Russia. Yes killing the recruiters when they come to draft the citizens is how they show love for Putin. The Iron Curtain is gone. Information freely flows out of Russia now. There are no "opposition parties" in Russia either. Anyone that is a real threat gets eliminated.

He's not sitting pretty after this. I doubt they'll be a revolt or anything. The people still remember the last time and really don't want to go through that again. It will cause problems for him later politically though. Russians don't tolerate a weak leader and his response was weak. If this is his last term, which it might well be given his age, whoever he names as his successor this will tarnish them and possibly cost them the election.

To all the people in the comments spinning this as a genius move planned by Putin to it makes Putin look good, why would you think him appearing weak is a genius move by him or something he'd orchestrate? He's pardoned the group and turned to Belarus for help. That looks weak. Even according to Russian news they shot down 2 helicopters and killed people yet he pardons them rather than at least imprison them or the best move is killing them. You don't understand Russians if you think this is a win for him. Russians value strength in a leader. Period. Nothing else. Arresting them and putting them to death for treason is the strong move. It's a major power play. Pardoning them and calling in your buddy for backup is weak.

I'm really tired of people getting this wrong. It didn't "go missing". According to them, they over valued items they sent to Ukraine and they were short 6.2 billion in the promised aid. Meaning they're sending another 6.2 billion worth of equipment. They didn't over spend, they under spent. Nothing went missing. There was no cash involved. Edit: Listening to the release I don't understand where people are getting that they sent more than they were supposed to. They clearly say they valued them "as new" when the real value was used. Who values a used car more than the new one?

@Ghastly_Grinner He just publicly stated he had 25k men ready. 8k when almost all your military is hundreds of miles away is enough. The fact he and his men have all already been pardoned says a lot. It doesn't make Putin look good in the eyes of the people. Russians value strength. That's it, and that makes him look weak. Relying on Belarus also looks weak. This isn't the win people seem to believe it is for Putin. He'll need to take a very aggressive stance soon on something or in some way to prove he's not become weak.

Yes just ignore the men killing recruiters, the hundreds of thousands at least that fled after the draft was instated, that Russia has lost a lot of ground they gained in Ukraine, etc. They wanted more money. That was the chief complaint. They are indeed mercenaries. They are paid by the government outside the normal military pay scale. That makes them, by definition mercenaries. Loyalty has nothing to do with if you're a mercenary or not. Lots of "contractors" for the US military are very loyal to the US. They're still mercenaries. The Russian military isn't currently anywhere near Moscow so no, they would not have been able to "easily put down a coup" because it would take days to get there.
