They thought Gamestop was undervalued and believed it should be worth around $40-$60. Since it's settling around that price they were right. The hedge funds were betting on it dropping to below $2. Worked out in the end. That was after months of news articles saying it was worthless ignoring that new systems were coming out and the new CEO is looking at going in a new direction with the company.
