You're teacher wasn't great if they couldn't answer that question. Sorry, but it's found in the Federalist papers and correspondence from the time. The Supreme Court is a lifetime appointment to keep politics out of it. Because they are there for so long and aren't subject to a vote, they can make decisions based on the law and Constitution rather than swing dramatically due to political changes. The same reason it's so difficult to add or change the Constitution. It to prevent huge swings in public opinion from having long lasting consequences. That's also why the states have so much power. The Founders wanted the state to have the most control over people's everyday lives because they are in more direct contact with their citizens and understand the cultural, economical, and social opinions of the people. The seat of the federal government was also intentionally set away from the people because their decisions weren't supposed to have significant impact on the everyday citizen, but deal more with international and issues between states. Edit: Our government is supposed to be very decentralized. Unfortunately the federal government has seized more and more power away from the state and grown far larger than ever intended. Some law changes need to be brought before the Supreme Court and challenged, like an overbroad interpretation of the Commerce clause, to give some of that power back where it belongs.

@bullmoose5574 I agree about the trading thing. It would make a huge impact on who runs and how long they remain in office.

@DocNo27 Considering how badly that percentage is that does vote at making informed decisions, I don't think making more uninformed voters vote is the answer. Nobody should vote that isn't engaged or aware of what's going on and doesn't understand how our system functions.

@musicninja98 I agree with a lot of that except the speech thing because that would be impossible to prove. Minus speaking fees, they can be "paid" in other ways like political donations or employment after they leave office which would be impossible to prove at the time. I've been disappointed in how many Representatives seem to believe their job is to represent the entire country and even people outside of it, rather than their constituents. The same is true for Senators, but at least they serve the state's interest and not the constitutes to fall back on as an excuse. Like I said in another comment, this is because the people being elected and the people voting don't understand how our system works.
