It's got nothing to do with economics. It's how government funding and budgeting has worked for decades. An agency is budgeted the same amount they spent the year before. Their budget is only reduced because the president reduces it or if they didn't spend everything budgeted to them the previous year. The president's budget is based on what each agency head submits for the next budget. If no one ever interrupts the machine, it just keeps spinning.

He doesn't have the authority. A federal judge from Hawaii tried similar things his first term. That resulted in a Supreme Court ruling that judges can't interfere in the responsibilities and duties of the president, and doing so breaches the separation of powers. Imagine an activist judge just deciding to rule a president can't negotiate with a foreign leader or order a military mission to rescue someone.

It's not a coup and anyone saying it is doesn't know what one is. It's the head of the Executive Branch telling the executive branch what to do. It is 100% constitutional and has been done to varying degrees throughout our history. I'm assuming what he means is not through executive orders and instead by Congressional Acts and laws. EOs are 100% constitutional, just not permanent which is where a potential future problem can come in. Edit: About 90% of what FDR did was by EO and they still stand today. Teddy did a lot through them too. It's going to depend on how the public feels about them moving forward. I'd suggest listening to Dershowitz channel for proper legal analysis. He can't stand Trump so he's not biased in his favor. He only cares about the law and has been on Trump's side as far as how it's been being used.

See, you just outted yourself. DOGE is indeed a real department. It's the digital department Obama created with Congressional approval simply renamed. That was done and laid out day 1. It's not a new department. It was formerly the United States Digital Service. Now it's the US DOGE Service Temporary Organization, so the initials even stayed the same. The US Digital Service was created to modernize government systems. Something DOGE is also currently doing. The reason that department can be used is because it's creation was for "improving workplace productivity, reducing costs, increasing efficiency." As for showing what's been found, a government website has been created that lists every expenditure they've found and it's searchable. Musk isn't updating it. Government workers are. Edit: Why are people like you so horrified by government transparency? I know it's been promised especially since Obama. He ran on being the "most transparent president in history." Now that it's really being done people that loved Obama and what he promised are freaking out. Very strange.

Did you see the press conference last night? Trump pointing out one of them made off with $30 million in taxpayer money. Musk wouldn't say stole, but danced around it. Said we need to find out how they've made all that money. If they're that a good a trader they should manage everybody's investments. We need Kash confirmed to start investigating people.

@genebrittain2568 I don't understand why people are saying that. They can indeed make cuts. Congress approves the budget submitted BY the president. USAID's spending is completely at the president's discretion. There are things they can't cut, but everything they're canceling is discretionary spending of these agencies. I explained how the budget is done every year in a post. Whatever they slash now that won't get spent by the end of the budgeted year, that amount is automatically cut from the next budget because of how budgeting for government agencies works. So what they're cutting now will be removed from discretionary spending for that agency next year. Then, DOGE will recommend more cuts to programs currently line item funded by Congress in the current budget in the next one. Edit: People seem to be confusing freezing spending while an audit of an agency is taking place with that funding being removed. It's not. That's how an audit works. Everything stops while it's being done because you can't have things constantly changing. They're getting the audits done fairly quickly. Anything not line item in the budget, can be stopped. It's set up that way because everything else is flexible and can be moved around depending on what the priority of the department gets set to and that changes frequently.

@aerostorm_ Trump has made clear he's tasked Musk with eliminating 2 trillion in spending minimum. Musk swears he can do it 18 months or less. That combined with tarrifs and new businesses creating more taxes will hopefully be enough to at least greatly reduce our income taxes and start paying down the debt. Trump hopes to be able to eliminate our income tax, but I'm not holding my breath on that happening.

This is the small agencies. USAID was about 1% of the budget. Musk promised Trump he'd eliminate 2 trillion in spending in less than 18 months. The Pentagon regularly looses about half a trillion a year. As in they can't account for it and don't know where it went. It's absolutely possible and hopefully will be more than the 2 trillion.

12:21 I can explain why this happens. An agency's budget is based only on what they spent the following year. If they don't spend everything budgeted to them, it will be reduced to what they did spend going forward. So, as long as they keep spending what Congress gives them no matter what it's on, they'll continue getting that amount year over year. That's how in 2 days DOGE has been able to eliminated $1 billion in spending, and that's not even getting near the huge spending areas in the budget. These are the smaller agencies. I mean the Pentagon misplaces and looses that every day.

It's even dumber. He's essentially arguing a CEO of a company is attempting a hostile takeover of his own company by taking direct control of his company instead of letting the management he hired do it.
