@MicahMicahel It already was a religion or cult rather. He was the chosen one to fulfill a prophecy. They were trying to recreate mythical race, the Aryans, who had superior intellect and super natural powers like the ability to read minds. Their civilization was destroyed and they fled throughout Europe and intermingled with the population. They believed Germans were direct descendants of that race and if they purged all the impurities from it, they'd bring it all back. The archeological expeditions were to search for proof that Germans were the original race. That's it in a brief summary. Edit: The search for religious artifacts was because they believe all religions were started by people worshipping members of that race so they would be proof and they believed they also held bits of their former power.
