Edit: Blocking people from running is something the court has been very hands off on. It's always ruled that it should be up to the people to decide no matter what the person has done. Even after the Civil War, they never blocked former Confederates from running for any office. Let that sink in. People that openly revolted, killed each other, didn't prevent them from running or see them as some sort of threat.

A lot of it is guilt. Imposter syndrome is what it's called. The people in the comments saying they'll be protected during the communist takeover know nothing about what happened in the other countries. These people weren't safe. Mobsters with a small army went into factories and took them over. Putting themselves on top. When it settles down, loyalty to the party determines who gets to be wealthy and it can be stripped away in an instant. They do have the ability to flee that normal people don't, but they'll be abandoning their billions because it's all in stocks and holdings. It's not liquid. When you know something will never happen, it's easy to support it to ease your own conscious. It's completely different when it's staring you in the face as a real possibility.
