There seems to be some misunderstanding of the credit card reasons. It's a financial decision. It's funny because Tim was so close when he was talking about the exchange rate. Russian currency is in free fall and the banks are unstable. The exchange rate is fluctuating a lot in mere seconds. If the exchange rate changes in the middle of a transaction, the difference in the amounts will come from the card company because they can't take money from the account when they'd already approved the amount for the purchase. Usually the fees these companies charge retailers to use Visa and other cards is enough to cover the normal small fluctuations. Right now with the instability of Russian currency, it's likely to be more than what is built in causing the card companies to cover the difference and lose money. The "Russia bad" is strictly PR to most likely keep from creating a panic that could collapse banks in Russia (costing them even more) and to earn brownie points in the west. Edit: That's why it only effects international purchases and not local ones. A bit disappointed in Tim for pushing hysteria simply because he doesn't understand the financial element. BRIC has been doing this for awhile too in an attempt to take over the US being the Petro dollar. There's nothing new except the MSM talking about it now to get those clicks.

Yes and no. They weren't under sanctions. They were under the financial obligation to pay the other countries back for the war. Add in a global depression and that's what caused it. It's just the effects of the depression were blamed on the economic impact from having to pay the other countries. Germany had begun to prosper again right before the depression, but because they hadn't economically recovered enough the depression hit them even harder than other western countries.

@scottperry5454 Japan was invading it's neighbors for resources. Specifically oil. It wanted it to continue to fuel their war efforts of taking over Asia. Yes the US embargoed oil, but they could have stopped trying to increase their war efforts and their need for it would have been reduced. So blaming the US for trying to prevent a complete takeover of Asia is extremely one sided. Why don't you do a bit of research into what Japan was doing in Korea and is why Koreans still hate Japan.
