I've been surprised how many people in this comment section seem to not know marriage existed before Christianity. I suppose I shouldn't be, but I still was. Marriage, in some form, has been a thing since before civilization began. It's been tied to a religious ceremony since then too. Religion predates civilization. My Native American tribe even had the concept of divorce.

@Robert-qm7yi You do understand that if "marriage" was only a religious ceremony, that the person/religion overseeing that particular union would make those decisions. There would be no law determining who can and can't. I supported that all marriage done by the state should be a legal civil union because it's seen as basically a contract by the state. That would remove any aspect of religion from the state thus separating church and state. You would sign paperwork equivalent to a contract and submit it to the state. The ceremony has always been the religious part of marriage so that would be regulated back to religions. Edit: You seem to be under the assumption that marriage is only a Christian thing. It was honored by a religious ceremony in every civilization that's ever existed. Even my Native tribe practiced it long before any outsiders set foot in the Americas.

@mcpunchins Marriage was never about syphilis. I don't know where that came from. It's always been about birthrights. That birthright might be learning the skills your father has acquired so you can build off his knowledge to physical property. A perfect example is in the Bible. Jesus was learning to be a carpenter because his father was one. The idea of marriage and it being a religious ceremony to seal it, predates all currently widely practiced religions. The government was only ever involved when it came to the ruling class. Those not in the ruling class still got married. It was even in tribes before they were discovered by the West so it's not even a Western thing. In tribes it had to do with responsibilities more than possessions, but those still factored in. Women would want the most skilled hunter so they knew they and their children would survive, but also so their children could learn the secrets for that skill. Edit: Many try to claim Native life was socialism or even Communism. In reality it was very much a meritocracy. Your standing in the tribe was determined by your skill. That skill could be in something besides hunting, but you better be the best at it.
