Others are just data before and after mask mandates were put in place without taking any other data into consideration. The claim they don't work comes from the CDC. They didn't say they don't only work against this variant. They never worked. You know how not to spit on people? Don't talk a lot and sneeze and cough into your elbow. That's more effective than any mask other than N95. Edit: The only circumstances they would have any effect is if you're sick and coughing and sneezing a lot. What's more effective is staying home. Masks were studied for years as a possibility to help in flu season. They were researched for medical settings to try to prevent it spreading in hospitals. Nothing really worked and that's what led to the invention of the N95.
