I'm pro Union, but they shouldn't be for government employees. It gives them power over the people that they weren't given by the people. It puts them in a position where they can pretty much hold the citizenry captive.

@joemama5181 A woman who left the FBI because of what they were doing said it pretty much has to be dismantled and rebuilt. That what's going on is too ingrained in the current agency. The only way to get it out is to redo it. There have been a few patriotic whistle blowers, but too few.

@seemlesslies They absolutely can strike. I don't know who told you that. They have to maintain enough to continue to provide whatever service, but they can still strike. Police do it, EMT do it, the Air Traffic Control did it under Reagan. Which is when the provision was added that they couldn't shut down all services in the process of one. Striking is their main leverage. It's the only real power a Union has. Otherwise, if the employer refused to negotiate at contract time, what are they going to do about it?

@seemlesslies They absolutely can strike. Reagan busted the Air Traffic Control strike in the 80s. A union is unless without that ability. They just have to maintain a skeleton crew to provide the minimum services. Edit: Teachers go on strike. They're government employees. Police do it and are also government employees.

@warrenbuyer Then how do teachers strike? No, they're not. They simply have to have enough working through it to continue the minimum services. That's only for certain services like police and fire where the safety of the people is at risk. Edit: I've seen this claim a couple of times. I don't know where it's coming from, but it's false. Air Traffic Control went on strike in the 80s. Teachers in different states go on strike often and they're government employees. Reagan let it go on for a bit, until the people were good and mad, then busted it. Who's going to go after the federal government for Union busting? The federal government is who enforces those protections. There hasn't been one since because he set the groundwork for how to deal with it.

Let them strike. Those in the comments claiming governments' employees can't strike are wrong. Only required services like police and fire can't. They just don't because Reagan showed how to deal with it when air traffic controllers did it in the 80s. He let the strike go for a couple of days until the people were good and angry, then busted it. It's the Department of Labor and DOJ who enforces laws protecting Unions and their members from retaliation. The government isn't going to prosecute itself. They haven't bothered since then because they learned it's pointless. I guess they need to remember it.
