@JohnJ469 Medicare here is not what people think. You pay premiums, have deductibles, and it doesn't cover a lot of stuff. It is one of the main reasons healthcare is so expensive here, not those who don't pay. It pays less than 10% of a medical bill and the hospital or doctor has to write off the rest. Since the elderly use higher cost care far more often then the rest of the population, it causes everyone else's cost to rise to make up the loss. If a hospital only got what Medicare pays, they wouldn't be able to continue providing high level care or afford new equipment. That's why many doctors limit or even refuse Medicare patients. All that's not including the added cost to just file it. One mistake on filling out a form and a business faces stiff fines for Medicare fraud. To make sure that doesn't happen, you have to hire a Medicare compliance officer who's job is to keep up with all the new regulations Medicare puts out constantly in an attempt to be able to fine companies or to get out of paying. For example a PSA is a blood test to check for prostate cancer. Medicare won't pay for it unless you have prostate cancer. If a doctor orders it because the patient has an enlarged prostate, unless it comes back positive for cancer, the elderly patient now has to pay out of pocket for an expensive test they can't afford.
