@TheBigBigSean "If you want to live in a low-end neighborhood, you can. Some of us like to live in nice well kept neighborhoods with high property values". Yeah those houses aren't in HOAs either. They've got acres and security fencing. The house we looked at in the HOA was cheaper than the one we purchased in a much nicer neighborhood. A neighborhood that has large yards, big houses, and is in the best school district. That determines the value more than any HOA does. The HOA neighborhood is cookie cutter houses stacked on top of each other. My house in most large cities would cost millions. Your house will never be worth more than the house that looks exactly like yours across the street. Meanwhile I can easily increase my home's value without just relying on the market to do so. I can add an inground pool (already have one), a koi pond, gardens, architectural details, etc. I always love when people brag about how much the market has gone up increasing the cost of their home, like they personally did something to earn that. You're restricted by what the market will allow based on the price per square foot in that area. I'm not, but yeah you're the mature adult one. It's like bragging that the value of your apartment complex increased. Edit: Bought our home in 2021 and it's more than doubled in value. Yours increased at the half the amount in twice the time. HOAs do not increase the value of home at the same rate one outside them can.

Yeah me either. Me and hubby vowed to never live in one. We almost had to because we were getting desperate to get into a house because we'd moved for a new job. If we had ended up in it we'd have sold it by now. Somebody telling me what I'm allowed to do with my own property is crazy to me. Fortunately we found a house in one of the best neighborhoods. The couple were renovating it and ended up getting a divorce so we were able to grab it up at assessment value.

@Gilberto90 That's the thing though. Nobody can make improvements to increase the value of their home. You can do some inside, but that's pretty limited value wise. You can't increase the square footage (the cheapest way to drastically increase the value), you can't add gardens in the front to increase curb appeal, you can't even add central air if it doesn't have it. You can't have anything permanent everybody else doesn't have. It's because that could decrease the value of the other houses. You're completely at the whims of the market. People hear that it prevents your neighbors from driving down property values and never understand it also limits your property value.
