  2. I didn't view it any differently than the "adopt a wild animal" or several others. If you do that, very little of your money if any goes to the cause. Like 99% of those kinds of organizations. Just like I didn't buy land in the rainforest in the 80s or 90s. Now The Arbor Day Foundation did send me 10 lovely saplings that I planted for my donation. Most of them survived even. Edit: The buying an acre of rainforest was shilled by major celebrities. Even Sean Connery. I bet the part I "bought" has been destroyed by now.
