I really don't understand this take when there have been many movies that were hits that did the same thing. Like Philadelphia which encouraged donations for AIDS research. The budget was $14 million. That was written off by Disney after they purchased Fox. We know $5 million was crowd funded to purchase the rights from Disney. Either way it's made more than double the original budget so by definition it's a hit.
