I can see that the campaign they signed off on was getting internet celebrities and influencers to push the brand without the specifics of which ones. They'd approve the making of cans before hand too. Then the VP picks who she wants and contacts their agents to make it happen. That's 100% plausible. Even in normal ad campaigns the CEOs aren't over who's hired to act in the commercial and this would have a similar equivalency to that. It was a mistake because they never imagined a controversial figure who be picked given that that's not traditionally done in marketing.

@schmiggidy I imagine they had an awareness that a campaign using influencers was being done, but not the specific ones anymore than they hire the actors for the commercial. You contract that out to people who know more about that than you do. In a normal campaign the Marketing would hire an ad agency to take care of the specifics or if they're in house, they'd hire a talent scout to find the actors.
