@spidgeb3292 No it isn't as long as it's for personal consumption. Regulations are if your farm is a business. I grew up not eating anything we didn't grow, kill, or trade for. You don't have to know husbandry, you just have to be able to fire a gun.

@Freedommjw Squash is a bad example because it's already a bit finicky. Definitely not something you start with. Anyone can grow potatoes and carrots. Even green beans are extremely easy. That and maybe some corn because it's easy to put up for the winter and can be used to make types of bread and that's all you need to survive. Do that and kill a couple deer and maybe a wild pig for the freezer. You can even just do trapping to get small amounts of meat and furs to make clothing if you have to. I know people that lived like this. I lived just slightly above that growing up. It's not a life of luxury or easy, but it's definitely doable without much knowledge before hand. In rural areas, where you'd be moving to, there are people that are happy to help and teach you if you ask.
