I see LD C pointed out that Delaware still had slaves. The US still had over 400,000 slaves at the end of the Civil War. The Emancipation Proclamation only "freed" slaves in the Confederacy, which Lincoln didn't have jurisdiction over at the time. So it was just a thing to rally the public behind the war because the US had been losing. Slavery was still legal in Kentucky, Missouri, West Virginia, and Delaware at the end of the Civil War. After the 13th amendment was passed, the slave owners in those states received compensation for freeing their slaves. Delaware was the last state to officially outlaw it when they finally ratified the 13th Amendment in 1901. Edit: I know everyone is taught slavery was only a Confederate thing and south bad.

@eric4946 It's always been called Juneteenth and has been celebrated in Texas and surrounding areas for decades. It was made a paid holiday in Texas in the 80s. Almost nobody outside of those areas knew it was a thing until 2020 and St. Floyd. Then suddenly New York and a couple other Democrat controlled states adopted it for some stupid reason. Celebrating the ratification of the 13th Amendment would have made much more sense than chosing a very regional holiday that only affected a small number.

Making this a major holiday is going to be so bad. It was respected in the regions it was celebrated in, Texas and surrounding areas, by everybody. Black people would have celebrations, cookouts, concerts, etc and huwhite people stayed out of it. It's not for us. Now huwhite upper class chicks are going to start using it as a day to get huwhite girl wasted within 5 years.
