@chronick6142 The Libertarian response? That's their call if they choose to run their business that way. It's up to the market/society to decide if they'll allow that company to survive or if people will even choose to work there. There is no line for rights outside causing bodily harm. You're for limiting people's right to associate so how can you expect people to not decide all rights can be severely limited?

@jazzyj7834 This post is in response to ADULTS in Ivy league schools chanting horrible things about a racial/religious group and in some cases going beyond that and threatening them or hunting them down attempting to drive them off campus losing job offers that Stossel brought up. The Libertarian view is freedom to associate. It applies to the employer and the employees. It's a response to "loosing job offers" and attempting to clarify that there are legitimate reasons for a job offer being withdrawn. Especially expressing as an adult and recently bad views.

I agree. Nobody is preventing them from speaking. In fact the opposite. They did exercise their free speech and allowed future employers to know what they believe. Shockingly people of that group or that have business with clients of that group withdrew job offers because they don't want to hire people that hate them which is also their right. Little disappointed in his take on that. The Libertarian view is each is free to associate or not associate.

Nobody's forcing them to record it and post it. That's their own stupidity.

@aliendroneservices6621 So libertarians are secret socialists? Nope. Large government is bad and socialism requires an extremely large government and even more taxes. Taxation is theft.
2
@n9wox NYU is considered a part of the government because it receives government funding. It's supposed to be held to the Constitution. It's not a private business which the Constitution has absolutely no authority over.
2
@Moore-s5p Also disagree. You have a freedom of association which includes a business or owner of a business. You're thinking is how we ended up with quotas because the right to associate was removed.
2
An employer not hiring you isn't "cancel culture" anyway. People have the right to associate.
2
People are free to call you whatever they want. Free speech is for everyone.
2
@HollyMoore-wo2mh College is considered part of the government because they recieve government funds. This comment is about businesses being able to deny employment or remove an employee.

@acctsys I like Ancaps just fine, but everyone seems to think that's what every libertarian believes which is just so wrong. They're the extreme just like every political leaning has. Them and the crazy open borders no laws ones are what everyone thinks of. Most of us do believe that some amount of government and laws are necessary.

Libertarians view private property as the most important right. Your person is included in private property. They also believe in the non agression principle. Which is no physical harm unless you physically harm my private property. All rights stem from that. Basically you can do whatever you want on your private property as long as it doesn't harm others. Contrary to what some will say, that doesn't extend to public property. Each community should be able to set the standards they want in public. Which is where freedom to associate comes in. Since you're free to associate with who you want, this creates communities of like minded individuals that will agree more readily on what's allowed in public limiting friction.
1
Nope. We weren't denied being able to attend a public university because we listened to a certain type of music. People protested which is their right, but nobody was cancelled.
1
@killerratchet1973 So you think forcing people to associate with people they hate and want to physically harm will work out better? Lovely work environment that will create. Sorry, but everyone has the right to associate. If an employer doesn't want to hire someone they're free to do that. That's how we ended up with quotas and people in positions they're not able to handle because of forced association. So you choose to give up rights for a possibility of safety. According to Franklin then you don't deserve either.

Depending on where. Please tell me where it's illegal to purchase it. Where has the government made it illegal for someone to purchase said literature? A government and community can decide what's taught in schools using their money. That's what taxation with representation means. However, they can not ban the sell or consumption of literature or punish speech on the public square. Edit: Public schools and the teachers within them are an arm of the government. The government can not force ideology, beliefs, or political beliefs onto citizens. It's the government compelling speech. "Anti-racism" is just racism. It's just against the majority instead of the minority so no that's not allowed from the government according to the Civil Rights Act. Your keyword is "promoting" which is no.
1
No it shouldn't. Not by law. That's setting limits on speech.
1
Right to associate is the Libertarian view. A community should decide for itself what it allows in public as well as far as behavior goes. Since you're free to associate that would create communities of like minded individuals anyway.
1
I saw that. Some black kid got offended by the Mandarin word for "uh" in English. So stupid.
1
@ge2719 What's currently occurring on some, mostly Ivy league, campuses. A potential employer has every right to rescind a job offer for any reason anyway because they have the right to associate just like everyone else.
1
"Hate speech" isn't a thing in the US according to the Supreme Court. The government can't punish you for what you say. The exception is inciting violence, but it has to result in violence for a charge to stick.
1
Again, hate speech doesn't exist. I already stated the pros of allowing bad ideas to be openly stated. It's so they can be defeated by good ideas.
1
There's no such thing as hate speech. The Supreme Court has ruled that many times.
1
My son experienced something similar. His math professor failed all the male students that appeared huwhite. They ended up going to the Dean and getting their grades adjusted back.
1
Yes they do.
1
That's not even a speech issue. It's a right to associate issue. Public vs private.
1
How? Freedom of speech and expression is protected under the Constitution. That includes government funded schools. It's against the law to be silenced or punished by the government for your speech. Maybe understand what's in the Constitution instead of looking like an idiot. The Constitution has nothing to do with opinions. You can loudly proclaim your hatred of someone's speech. The government can't punish you or them for it.
1
According to the Supreme Court freedom of speech and expression does include burning the flag. That falls under expression which people seem to forget is in there.

@@amandzzz You're bringing up laws that a Libertarian wouldn't agree with being in place in the first place. They believe in freedom to associate in all areas including the workplace. Also that depends on the state. Most are at will employment which means you can be let go at any point with no explanation. I saw someone fired because they didn't knock before entering the boss's office. Edit: You can also be fired for "free speech". There's no such thing on private property. Free speech means the government can't punish you for what you say. That's been upheld by the Supreme Court. What you say away from your place of employment is a different can of worms, but Libertarian wise still would go back to freedom of association.
1
That's not cancel culture. Employers are free to hire whoever they want.
1
So it would get you removed from social media or kicked out of a government supported college? Because that's cancel culture. Individuals choosing not to associate with you is their right guaranteed by the Constitution.
1
They can speak and I hope they continue to do so so we can see who they are. Potential future employers can certainly refuse them a job too because they'd most likely cause problems within the workplace.
