@Jack Sparrow Unions are part of the problem in education. When they protect people that take advantage of their position of authority over a child, you can't argue they are good. Everyone upset about priests and them doing it, yet if there's a complaint about a teacher they just get shuffled around and it's all good. This happens a lot more than people are aware. My brother got put into the teacher's little closet for half the day as punishment for talking in class in elementary. That teacher kept teaching and collected her pension when she retired years later. That's what teacher Unions do. Look at the teacher's Unions fighting reopening. They are getting paid regardless while the children fall behind. Their demands aren't about classroom safety either, even though that's what they're yelling. It's wanting CRT in the classroom and decolonization of subjects. In California they've just negotiated no more grades.

@kimobrien. What? My brother works for a family hardware store that employs more than 20 because it also does construction bids. I think you don't know anyone that runs a business and are talking out your a$s. In fact I know you are because you think a business can just print it's own money. Some Unions are good and some are bad. I don't care for government Unions and no one in my family has either even though my grandfather, father, and husband were Union presidents. I'm well aware that Unions help workers by them being able to use the Union labor lawyer rather than pay for one of their own. However, a Union should not get to the point that most government ones are. They've negotiated to the point that the only way they can be fired is if they are convicted of a serious crime. That's not fair to the workers that come in, pay their dues, and do their job. It shouldn't be used as a sheild to protect bad people which it too often is. I know teachers that have had sexual misconduct against students that can't be fired because of the wording of the contract. They get moved to a low level administration job instead. My tax dollars shouldn't be paying the salary of someone like that unless it's in a jail cell.

@funveeable Depends on where and if the local Union elects a good Union President. Then again a small local Union President doesn't make very much because it's a voluntary position. Hubby got paid $250 a month and we never had a vacation that wasn't interrupted by Union business for a worker. Since they all knew him, they'd skip the chain of command and just call him. Even in the middle of the night. My father and grandfather were also Union presidents so I knew what was coming when he volunteered. He saved several jobs and got two good settlements for wrongful termination for them. My father was such a good negotiator he negotiated a plant manager out of a job one contract. He was a bad boss and treated the workers bad.
