It's making the good guys really be the bad guys and it's not Sauron's fault because he really tries not to become that. It's what Disney did with Maleficent. What they are doing is disgusting and intentional.

I believe that's likely. If Sauron is who has been leaked to be, they are portraying him as being forced into it and was trying to escape being a bad guy. It's disgusting because he always chose that since he was in Valinor following Melkor.

@eacaraxe Letter 297 was never sent and was before he finished the Silmarillion. It was discussing how he used names and such. Letter 320 was very short and said she was like Mary in a Catholic sense. She was a leader in the rebellion (which says so in the Silmarillion, but clarifies she didn't participate in the Kinslaying) and rejected her pardon that allowed her to return. It was her choice to remain. She'd been forgiven just like the others. She is the one that continued her punishment. She passed a test she'd set for herself in her rejection of the ring. None of what you're attempting to claim is true. The showrunners also only mentioned the Silmarillion and appendices that were used for reference. You're attempting to create a narrative that's whole spun out of nothing. Edit: If by HoME you mean the Lost Tales, those are not canon and aren't considered so. They are unfinished stories that Tolkien had not completed and was working on. He wrote in a couple of letters about the folly and silliness he knew trying to flesh out every story was, but he still loved doing it. No author's work is complete until it's sent by them to published as every story goes through many alterations. Just like there were many iterations that he scraped before completing the Silmarillion. He wrote 7 different versions.

@markn4779 Considering they both used the same mythology to take their work from, it's not surprising they'd have some overlap. I checked and they researched the same mythological stories from the same areas. Trying to claim that Tolkien basically stole it is a bold claim I doubt you have proof of. It's completely normal for people using the same sources to create similar things. In fact, it would be expected.

@GreyMASTA Gollum was corrupted by The One Ring and there's no example of him being good. There's examples of him trying to fight off the corruption, but his character even in those moments wasn't "good", just trying to survive. All of the wizards failed except Gandalf. So that means all but him fell to corruption. Saruman failing like the others doesn't make him unique, it makes Gandalf unique in being able to resist it. Hobbits weren't "isolationists". The nearby human towns knew they existed. Dwarves, humans, Hobbits, and Elves all lived apart from each other so again they aren't unique. Theoden was not how he was portrayed in the movie. He was under a spell, but he was not bad or evil. He listened to bad advice, but he never harmed anyone. Everyone you're trying to make out as being both good and bad, 2 were always bad in the books and 1 was never really a bad guy and was under a spell. If you find that boring then don't read them.

They are doing what Disney did with Maleficent. The good guys in the original story aren't really good. She tried to be but they forced her to do what she did, just like Halbrand is being forced to become Sauron because everyone around him is bad. It's deliberate and disgusting thing to do with Tolkien's work. I wondered from the start if that's the way they'd go, but it's clear now that that's the intent.
