@jaynepaige5702 No, you can speak the truth. For example, if I say something perfectly normal like "It's a lovely day today!". The truth is my exact words. The person I'm speaking it to interprets it as since I like the weather today, I must hate the weather we had yesterday. Now when they speak "their truth" about what was said, I said I hated the weather yesterday. That's not what I said so it's not the truth. It is how they interpreted what I said so it's their truth and only theirs.

@impeccabletaste1850 You're partially right. It comes from therapy. It's used to gradually show someone how past experiences can effect how they perceive current ones. The point is to eventually get them to drop their preconceptions and view situations from a more nuanced perspective. It's a prime example of why language used in psychology should never be used in mainstream speech. It gets twisted, misunderstood, and misused. Triggers is another good one. It's used for a patient with PTSD to identify things in their surroundings that illicit a severe anxiety response. It's so that they can then intentionally in controlled situations be exposed to that stimulus to desensitize themselves to it so they can gain better control of their lives. Not to try to force everyone else to make sure they never encounter it.
