I'm really sick of southern food being labeled as belonging to a race. It's class based.

The last time my son's friend Juan came to visit I made street tacos. It's just what I had planned for that day. I buy my groceries for the week all in one go and we didn't know he was coming until the day before he showed up. He loves them and wasn't offended at all.

@talesofgore9424 Minus the koolaid and watermelon water, that sounded like a meal I'd cook in the summer. That's just BBQ. That has no race connected to it, just areas depending on how the sauce is made or if it's dry rub. Why are people in the north connecting southern food to black people? That's the racist element in all this. I've got some chicken I'm going to fry Saturday with white gravy, buttermilk biscuits, and mashed potatoes. I guess I'm racist even though it's recipes that have been passed down for generations. Cornbread goes with butter beans or collard/turnip greens (I prefer turnip greens). I guess when I cook that I'm a racist too.

I think it's hilarious because black people are the ones that decided to call southern food "soul food" as a gimmick to sell to guilty white people from the north. Then they get pissed when it's connected to them.

It really isn't. They compliment each other well. Especially when you add the syrup. It's an old southern favorite. Just like shrimp and grits.

@talesofgore9424 I'm not fond of the "Soul food" category that cropped up a few years ago. It's not exclusive to black people and never was. It's just southern food. It's roots are Scottish with a bit of Caribbean thrown in here and there. It's how poor southerners have eaten for generations regardless of race. It would be like claiming Cajun food belongs to a particular race when it's a combination of French and southern cooking. Creole is heavier on the French technique side and lighter on the spices. It's considered fancy Cajun cooking because Cajun is poor people cooking.
