They do have the legal right to detain you and conduct an investigation if you don't show it because doing so gives them probable cause. There are also laws in many places that allow it.

Yep. Nothing was out. It was just pictures of items. The warehouse worker, usually a teenager, would dash back to grab the item for you. Some shoe stores are still like that.

@johnnoreau3570 Sean is right and wrong on this. Not showing it creates probable cause for detainment and an investigation which is allowed. So yes, you legally don't have to show it, if they decided to they could make it much worse for you for not doing so. It's really up to you if you think not showing the receipt is worth getting detained and searched over, which at that point would be 100% legal for them to do. Personally the few seconds it takes to just show is way less time consuming than being held in a room for who knows how long while they decide when they're going to conduct the search. Edit: It's honestly hilarious you think just saying how much you spent and walking out with it in the open means you obviously didn't steal it. That's exactly what someone that did steal it would say and how many videos are there now of people just walking out with buggies full of stuff without paying?

Yep. All places have increased losses because of them. It's because of people like me and I don't care. If it's something cheap that won't scan, it's just my pay for performing their job for them.

Even where those laws aren't on the books, not showing it gives them probable cause to detain you legally. It's not so simple.

They can also detain you until they conduct an investigation/search. Sure you didn't show your receipt, but was it worth it?

That's for elderly, not under aged. Otherwise the drinking age would be age discrimination. Children have greatly reduced rights.
