There is a wider problem. Violent crime is up everywhere, especially big cities. Calling attention to a place that has already surpassed the peak numbers from the most violent times in US history isn't "cherry picking". It's pointing a serious problem and the reason for it. There's historical precedent for this. There are periods that people care more about criminals than victims and large spikes in violent crime is always the result. It happened in the 20s and the 70s.

This is completely incorrect. Just because you lived in some weird place that somehow escaped the gangs fighting for territory doesn't mean it didn't happen. No we as children were not safer. We were just as likely to get kidnapped back then. It just rarely made national news because news was limited to a couple hours a day instead of 24/ 7. Statistics bare that out. I lived in a smallish southern rural town of just over 20,000 in a good neighborhood and even I experienced a couple of drive by shootings. Fortunately no one was injured, but it still happened. We were 40 times more likely to be killed at school than kids a couple of years ago. You only believed you were safer. I fortunately always lived in reality and knew how dangerous it was. That doesn't mean I let it control me or stop me, but it meant I was always very aware of my surroundings.

Unfortunately innocent people are always included in the victim count. I guess you missed the part of the video where people trying to testify against them are being murdered.

Meaning escalating the crime from a robbery to a murder. If you don't have a gun obviously you're less likely to kill. The scenario is if you are in possession of a gun and decide to commit a crime while in possession, you're much more likely to use it elevating the level of the crime. That's why there's an additional charge if you're in possession of a weapon while committing a crime versus using the weapon to commit the crime.

The height of violent crime in the US was the 80s and 90s.

Pretty sure possessing a firearm while selling crack is a violation of federal gun laws. To purchase a weapon you have to say you don't use illegal substances or commit crimes. If you get caught committing a crime while in possession of weapon...yeah you see the problem. That's not including state or local gun restrictions. Let's take drunk driving. You're driving drunk and in possession of a weapon. It's illegal to possess a weapon outside of your home while drinking. That's even the law in my Constitutional Carry state. So how is that an unjust charge? Instead of charging you with 2 or 3 separate crimes, they can instead charge you with the enhancement. I bet you 90% of the time that's the case. Edit: I'd have to look into it, but it's most likely only an option when committing a felony. That's already a serious charge. If it's a violent crime, then the weapon was likely used as the act of violence thus already increasing the charge. If you limit it to that, increasing sentencing would be the exact same thing.

That's what created the problems that lead up to the 80s and 90s spikes. That's why there were all these tough on crime bills and stuff. It was to correct the mistake of soft on crime that had been happening. Unfortunately once it gets up there, nefarious people seize on it, create opportunities (drug trade), and then because of how profitable it is and easy people fight for control of it. That's what happened in a nutshell. Edit: Once the people willing to do violence far outweigh the people keeping order, it gets ugly fast.

You think the mob was only in Philly and isn't still a thing? Now we've got the Italians, the Russians, the Asians, the Cajun, the Irish, etc. I seriously doubt the Bloods, Crips, MS13, and all the others give a crap about the mafia other than from the movie Scarface. It also does excuse a DA that refuses to do their job.

It's hard for me to feel too bad. The people being killed are most likely the ones that voted him into office. I felt like that during the pandemic when people in places like NYC were asking why no one would come help them protest their government. I realize not everyone voted for it, but they chose to live there fully aware of the politics there.
