  1. Real estate firms do that a lot. I just purchased a home and a lot of the ones we were shown were owned by them or a couple of individual agents that went in together. You're also competing against flippers, which are also usually real estate firms. Big real estate firms are also real estate investors. Again, not new. Every home that didn't need work were going into bidding wars. So instead we looked for one that needed some work. We bought slightly below appraisal and it will cost less than $10,000 to finish the renovation and increase the value by $40,000. It's perfectly livable until then because it's just finishing up the master bath, update flooring in the bedrooms, and yard work. Unfortunately most new home buyers want move in ready so that's why you're seeing so many bidding wars and houses going above asking. Add in the massive amounts of people moving out of larger cities and thus this situation is created.
