  1. Remove the trap and use a drain cleaning rod/snake to remove the obstruction. Re-assemble the pipes and pour a good amount of boiling water down the drain. You can buy a drain cleaning rod to attach to your battery drill for not much more than a bottle of this drain cleaner. Very few homes use steel pipe for drains. Some older homes may have galvanized pipes but most are PVC or brass traps, PVC mainlines or cast iron. Testing drain chemical on steel is fairly irrelevant. Better to test it on brass and/or cast iron. PVC is going to be resistant to any of these chemicals'
