Skokie made ONE mistake. The city denied the request for a permit. What people DON'T know is that this same group applied for march permits in several cities in that area, all of which had a substantial Jewish population. Deerfield, Highland Park, among others. The other cities IGNORED the applications. They did not DENY them. There was nothing to go to court with, absent a denial. I am glad you covered this, because it has long been lost. It was the key event that taught me..."Just because you are asked a question, doesn't mean you have to answer" It has served me well. That said...FREEDOM of speech applies to everyone. You do not have to like what they say, or even listen to them, but they MUST be allowed to say it. POPULAR ideas do not need protection. ACLU is no longer an ardent supporter of rights.
