For those who weren't around then, the VW Beetle was about the cheapest car on the market (the Toyotas were competing hard with them) and they made a HUGE deal that it was available for "under $2000" GM and Ford had to compete. As I recall, both the Pinto and the Vega were advertised at $2000. The Vega was trash. My younger brother had one. I can assure you, the rustproofing did NOT work. After a year, it was guzzling 1 quart of oil in less than 100 miles! With the cost of gas at that time (about 35 cents a gallon) the cost to drive in OIL expense was greater than gasoline expense!

LOL, that's what my brother said about his. Seriously, I went on a 300 mile road trip with him and he had to add FOUR quarts of oil!
