When I was a kid in the 50s and 60s, we had milk delivery 2 days a week. We had an insulated, metal 'milk box' on the front porch (as did everyone) and the local dairy would come twice a week and drop off 4 gallons of milk in glass bottles with paper caps. (there were 6 kids in our family) He came early in the morning, and it was 'the kids' job to fetch the milk off the porch and bring it to the kitchen. My mother also filled out a paper for butter or cheese as needed and the 'milk man' would bring whatever she ordered on his next visit. We had milk at every meal at home. The 'milk man' had a nice, middle class home and sustained his family's lifestyle with that job. Our school didn't have a cafeteria, they set up folding tables in the gymnasium for lunch every day and we brought our lunch from home in bags or lunch boxes. The school DID provide everyone with an 8oz. carton of milk, for which we paid 3 cents. My mother had a cigar box full of pennies and added three pennies to each lunch box every morning. Hence the term 'milk money'. I think the milk delivers went away around the mid-70s. I'm not sure. I still love a glass of fresh, cold milk! Even better with some Hershey's syrup for chocolate milk!

@rinistephenson5550 Yeah, it was a handy place to leave things for people to pick up..."I'll leave it for you in the milk box"
