  1. Ironically, If the Soviets had not renamed the city "Stalingrad" in 1925, this battle would probably never have taken place. Previously it had been "Tsaritsyn" but the Soviets couldn't have a city named after the Tsar. The Germans could have taken the oil resources of the Caucuses while bypassing Stalingrad, and rendering it irrelevant by cutting it off by shutting down the river north and south of the city. But they couldn't leave a city named for Stalin, and the Russians couldn't abandon one, named for Stalin. Had the Germans given Stalingrad the same treatment they gave Leningrad, the outcome of the war may have been very different.
